GCPS employees to be honored for saving co-worker’s life

August 21, 2019 / Permalink

On Thursday, August 22, at 10 a.m., three Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) employees will be honored by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Emergency Response Training and Support Services (ERTSS). The trio— Cindy Johnston, Sandy Purcell, and Dee Walls— will be recognized for helping to save the life of a fellow GCPS bus driver. The ceremony honoring Johnston, Purcell, and Walls will be held at the Transportation Service Center, located at 610 West Crogan St. in Lawrenceville.

The incident happened during a training session for bus drivers earlier this month. During the session, one of the drivers experienced a seizure, lost consciousness and stopped breathing. Johnson, Purcell, and Walls jumped into action. They moved their co-worker to the floor and administered CPR until paramedics arrived.

Don Moore, executive director of Transportation, is proud of his team. “The emergency room doctor said if Cindy, Sandy, and Dee had not jumped in and performed CPR, their co-worker would not have made it,” he said. “This is an example of why CPR certification is required of all our drivers and monitors.”

The three women will be presented with a plaque at the ceremony and their names will be listed on the AHA and ERTSS websites.
